Difference between Momin and Muslim
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
In the Qur’an and Hadith, we often see the words Muslim and Momin. Both represent followers of Islam, but there is a subtle difference:
Muslim: A person who submits outwardly to Islam; the external deeds of the Deen.
Momin: A person with true faith (Iman) in their heart; the inner spiritual state.
The word Momin comes from Iman, which means faith. Islam is the outer practice, while Iman is the inner conviction.

ToggleHadith Evidence: The Hadith of Jibrael (AS)
The Hadith of Jibrael (AS) distinguishes clearly between Islam, Iman, and Ihsan:
Reference: Sunan an-Nasa’i, Kitab Iman, Hadith 4994
Angel Jibrael (AS) came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in human form and asked him questions about the Deen.
Key Parts of the Hadith:
1. Islam – Outer Deeds
Prophet ﷺ said:
English:Islam means to worship Allah and not associate anything with Him; to establish Salah, to pay Zakah, to perform Hajj, and to fast Ramadan.
2. Iman – Inner Faith (Momin)
Prophet ﷺ said:
English: Iman is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Prophets, and the Divine Decree.
3. Ihsan – Spiritual Excellence
Prophet ﷺ said:
English:Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him; if you cannot see Him, He surely sees you.
3. Qur’anic Rules Regarding Muslim and Momin
Muslim = Outer Islam (Deeds)
Momin = Inner Faith (Iman)
When Iman is mentioned separately in the Qur’an, it refers to both Muslims (Islam outward) and Momineen (faith inward)
Qur’anic References:
Surah Al-e-Imran (3:102)
English:
O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims.
Surah Al-e-Imran (3:19)
English:
Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam. Those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge came to them. Whoever disbelieves in Allah’s Ayat, Allah is swift in calling to account.
Summary
Iman is the inner beliefs and Islam is the practical deeds of religion .
