Types of winds in Quran
We can find Allah (subhanahu wa ta ala) by pondering in all the creations around us. Quran invites us many times to ponder in the creations. For example in chapter 77 , Surah Al-Murasalat we see that 5 kinds of winds are described
By the (Winds) Sent Forth one after another (to man’s profit); (1) Which then blow violently in tempestuous Gusts, (2) And scatter (things) far and wide; (3) Then separate them, one from another, .(Yusuf ali translation) (4) And those winds that bring down the remembrance.(Eng Abdul Daryabadi translation)

ToggleFive kinds of winds
We see 5 kinds of winds are described here
1- The continuous moving winds
وَٱلۡمُرۡسَلَـٰتِ عُرۡفً۬ا
This is pointing towards the continuous movement of the wind. The continous movement of the wind is must to sustain life on earth. Without the movement of wind, life will not sustain on earth. The following are some of the reasons which tells why continuous air movement is must for life on earth
1. Oxygen Supply
Continuous air movement ensures the circulation of oxygen, which is vital for breathing. About 70% of the Earth’s oxygen is produced by the seas, primarily through phytoplankton, while trees contribute the remaining amount. These winds help transport the oxygen generated by both the seas and trees, maintaining sufficient levels for the survival of living organisms. Without fresh air movement, oxygen levels would deplete, threatening the survival of life..
2. Temperature Regulation
Air movement helps in the distribution and balance of temperature. It prevents extreme heat or cold from settling in one place, making environments more livable for humans, animals, and plants.
3. Removal of Carbon Dioxide
Air movement aids in the removal of carbon dioxide, a waste product of respiration, and helps maintain air quality. Stagnant air can cause carbon dioxide to accumulate, leading to harmful effects.
4. Prevention of Stagnation
Air circulation prevents stagnation of harmful gases or pollutants, which can otherwise accumulate and make environments unsafe or unhealthy for living organisms.
5. Wave Formation in the Sea
Air movement is essential for creating waves in the sea. The wind’s energy transfers to the water, generating waves that help maintain the movement and mixing of ocean currents. Without air movement, the sea would become still, affecting marine life and the global climate.
1- Why wind is moving continuously
2- The fast winds
فَٱلۡعَـٰصِفَـٰتِ عَصۡفً۬ا
This is pointing towards the winds that we see in hurricanes and storm etc. This is also the wind that can make heavy objects fly in the air. The following are some of the reasons which tells why continuous air movement is must for life on earth
1. Flying objects such as planes and birds
Very All birds and planes fly due to the wind hitting them fast enough to make them fly. This fast wind was made subservient to Prophet Suleiman (alayhay salam) and he used to make objects fly by this control.
2. Climate Regulation
Fast winds help redistribute heat across the Earth’s surface, playing a key role in climate regulation. They can prevent temperature extremes by circulating warm and cool air across regions.
3. Enhanced Ocean Mixing
Strong winds drive deep ocean currents and surface waves, promoting the mixing of ocean waters. This circulation helps maintain marine ecosystems, supports nutrient distribution, and stabilizes the global climate.
4. Pollutant Dispersion
Very fast winds help disperse pollutants, improving air quality by preventing the concentration of harmful gases in one area. They effectively clear smog, dust, and toxins from the atmosphere.
5. Storm Formation
Fast winds are often associated with storm systems, which, while potentially destructive, are crucial for replenishing freshwater supplies through precipitation and balancing global weather patterns.
6. Increased Erosion and Land Formation
Strong winds can reshape landscapes by eroding rock and soil, contributing to the formation of new landforms and influencing the distribution of sediments in arid and coastal regions.
These benefits show how very fast winds play a critical role in energy, climate, marine ecosystems, and even land dynamics.
3- The distributing winds
وَٱلنَّـٰشِرَٲتِ نَشۡرً۬ا
This is the winds that moves the small clouds , join them together to make larger clouds and then move them to their destinations where Allah (Subhanahu wa ta ala) has ordered the rain to fall
4- The breaker winds or the divider winds
فَٱلۡفَـٰرِقَـٰتِ فَرۡقً۬ا
These winds work together with the previous distributing winds. When the clouds reach their destination, these winds breaks the clouds into layers. Through these layers when wind pass, the water vapour get condensed and become heavy enough to drop down as rain drops.
All rain falls due to clouds that have layers. There are two kinds of clouds that cause rain and both have layers.
- The horizontal layered clouds. These are clouds of normal rain fall which send uniform rainfall.
- The vertical layered clouds , these clouds send the heavy rainfall like in storms.
To summarize, we can say that the winds converts the clouds into and layers and then the water vapours are converted to rain drops. This job is done by the the “breaker or divider winds”.
4- The winds that cause remembrance of Allah (Subahanahu wa ta ala)
فَٱلۡمُلۡقِيَـٰتِ ذِكۡرًا
The winds which creates hope and fear among the Muslims. A Muslim remembers Allah (swt) in hope and fear. to be continued
